Problem solving skills are a set of problem-solving strategies that can be used to solve problems. These include identifying what the problem is, determining if it has been solved before, and coming up with solutions to the problem.

Problem solving skills are useful in many different situations. They help us deal with everyday life issues, such as dealing with family members who have emotional problems, or we may need to use them to solve complex problems like math equations. We learn how to solve problems through practice. When we do something over and over again, our brain learns how to solve those types of problems. This is called learning. As children, we learn how to read and write by practicing. We also learn how to play sports by practicing.

Problem solving can be broken down into three steps:

  1. Identifying the problem;

  2. Generating potential solutions; and

  3. Evaluating the solutions.

When we have a problem, we tend to think about how to fix it from our own perspective. This means that we often look at the problem through our own lens, rather than considering other perspectives. We should always try to consider multiple perspectives before making decisions. Doing this helps us make better choices and avoid biases.

There are two types of problem-solving strategies: analytic and synthetic.

Analytic problem solving involves breaking down a complex situation into smaller parts and analysing each piece separately.

Synthetic problem solving involves generating ideas and then evaluating them together.

If you want to improve your problem solving skills, focus on developing your analytical thinking skills. Analytical thinking allows you to break down situations into smaller pieces and analyse each piece individually.
