Communication is the process of sharing information from one person or group with another. It is an essential skill that we use every day to communicate with others. People use verbal and nonverbal communication to express ideas and emotions to each other. For example, when speaking, we use verbal communication, and when writing we use nonverbal communication. Both forms are essential in understanding and creating different messages.

Just like verbal and written communication, Nonverbal communication skill is also important. Nonverbal communication is the use of body language, facial expressions, gestures, tone of voice, eye contact, and posture to communicate ideas and feelings.


Nonverbal communication is often overlooked in business settings, however, it is just as important as verbal communication. When we understand how others perceive us, we can make changes to our behavior and improve our relationships.


Nonverbal communication for stronger relationships.

Nonverbal communication plays a significant role in our lives, as it can improve a person’s ability to relate, engage, and establish meaningful interactions in everyday life. A better understanding of this type of communication may lead people to develop stronger relationships with others. Often referred to as body language, nonverbal communication can take many forms and may be interpreted in multiple ways by different people, especially across cultures.


Role of nonverbal communication at office & workplaces.

Non-verbal communication makes work in offices better. It can also help in interviews and businesses. Many other professions like teachers, journalists, lawyers, doctors, etc. need to communicate on regular basis. If their non-verbal communication is not up to the mark, then their work will suffer. For example, eye contact in interviews and meetings shows confidence and interest. While eye contact shows those things, it can also show overconfidence. It also shows the trustworthiness and accuracy of intentions


A person’s mindfulness may help increase understanding of personal nonverbal communication as well as the communication styles of others.

Non-verbal communication includes the following


1. Body language

Body language is a term used to describe how someone's body moves, gestures, facial expressions, and posture communicate their thoughts, feelings, and intentions. Body language is a major aspect of human interaction. Humans use body language to express themselves and understand others. When we interact with people, our bodies send out signals about what we want and need. These signals may be subtle, such as a slight change in tone of voice, or they may be obvious, such as pointing at something or shaking our head. Our body language affects how others perceive us. If we want to convey a message effectively, we should consider the following points.

2. Facial expression

Facial expression is the way we show emotion on our face. We use different facial muscles to make certain expressions. A smile shows happiness, while a frown shows sadness. Smiling makes people feel good, while frowning makes them feel bad. People who have pleasant facial expression tend to get along well with others.

3. Gestures

Gestures are movements that help us communicate ideas and emotions. Hand gestures are often used to emphasize words. For example, if I say, “I love you”, I might point my finger toward my heart. Pointing at my heart means that I am telling you that I love you. Other hand gestures include waving goodbye, giving a thumbs-up sign, and making a peace sign.


4. Posture

Posture refers to the position of your body. Standing straight and tall conveys confidence and authority. Slouching sends the opposite message. Sitting down with your back straight conveys respect and humility.


5. Eye contact

Eye contact is a powerful tool for communicating. When we look directly at someone, we tell them that we are paying attention to them. Looking away indicates that we don't care about what they're saying.


6. Touch

Touch is a natural way to connect with people. Holding hands, hugging, kissing, and touching each other's faces are ways to show affection and friendship. However, touching someone inappropriately can cause discomfort.


7. Voice

Voice is the sound of our speech. It tells others what we think and feel. Loud voices indicate anger, while soft voices mean calmness. Speaking loudly also helps us to be heard over background noise.
